2007 TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world.

The seventh annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will take place on November 20th, 2005, honoring individuals killed due to anti-transgender violence over the past years and those who have been killed in the previous twelve months.

Gwen Araujo, a 17-year-old transgender girl, was brutally murdered October 3rd, 2002. A jury decision in September of this year led to the conviction of two of her killers on second-dregree murder charges.

The Remembering Our Dead project <www.rememberingourdead.org> exists to honor individuals murdered as a result of anti-transgender violence and prejudice, and draw attention to the issue of anti-transgendered violence. Remembering Our Dead is a project of Gender Education and Advocacy, Inc.

The Edmonton area Transgender Support Groups will be hosting Edmonton's event at the Pride Centre of Edmonton, 9540-111 Ave. A memorial listing those we are remembering will be available to view Monday to Friday 6pm to 10pm, during the Community Drop In. On Tuesday 20 November 2007 a special evening of remembrance will be held at the Pride Centre of Edmonton, from 8 pm to 10 pm. There will be refreshments provided and a freewill donation received to help cover the costs of this event.

I am completely shocked with the new location announced for the pride centre on 111 st and 95 avenue. This is not the type of area I would have ever imagined the Pride Centre to end up. The website does not seem up to date. What the heck is going on?

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers Opportunities:

- We are currently looking for new volunteer hosts. Hosts work during the evenings, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., greeting individuals who drop-in or call the Centre, and assisting with administering the Centre activities during week-day evenings. Contact Dru or Richard at 488-3234 or email events@pridecentreofedmonton.org if you are interested. Training will be provided.

- Individuals are needed who can assist with renovation work. Work to be done includes:

* painting interior and murals;
* general construction drywall, framing and basic electrical;
* sewing cushions, pillows and curtains; and
* general labour, cleaning, moving, etc.

Experience is a definite asset, but those with just enthusiasm and the time to help are also very welcome. Work is happening over this next weekend (Sept 1 - 4) and then through to Sept. 14, the expected completion date.

If you have any time to contribute to the work, please contact Dru at the Centre, 488-3234 or email at events@pridecentreofedmonton.org.

Open House and BBQ August 19th.

I got a notice in my mailbox this morning about the upcoming Open House and BBQ at the Centre on August 19th. As a member of the straight community, I walked by the new centre and was curious, so checked this website. I noticed that there's been lots of controversy in the forums on this website about the location of the new centre in Norwood. I live just a couple of blocks from the centre, and certainly do welcome having the centre in Norwood. There are many folks in the neighborhood, like me, who have good jobs and are decent community oriented people. I can't make the BBQ, since I'll be out of town, but would like to thank you for extending the invitation to the community at large....

just an FYI to those who visit the centre or may want to check it out in the near future, Pride Centre will be closing it's doors at our 109 Street location around June 23rd

we will be opening up at out new location (9540-111Av) in early or mid July, and we will be holding a more formal Grand Re-Opening later on this summer

The Multicultural Discussion Forum

The Multicultural Discussion forum is being initiated because while there are many coming
out resources available in a North American context, not much is available for those from
other regions. This group will serve to address issues such as family pressures, family
honor, religious doctrines, internalized shame owing to cultural biases, and a whole
array of other issues which may not be dealt by conventional LGBT resources.

Eventually material will be drawn from the group for the anti-homophobia workshops that
will be conducted through the Pride Centre of Edmonton. A dialogue will hopefully be
initiated through these workshops with the objective to create a safer environment for
the many Canadian LGBT from multicultural origins who continue to live in immense fear
while their Canadian counterparts are making strides in LGBT rights.

All we ask is that things are kept civil and decent (no hating and no hook-ups please, there are plenty of other websites that cater to that) - we want to keep this place positive for all, so threads which are considered to be obscene or innapropriate in the forums WILL be either edited or deleted all together.
