The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world.

The seventh annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will take place on November 20th, 2005, honoring individuals killed due to anti-transgender violence over the past years and those who have been killed in the previous twelve months.

Gwen Araujo, a 17-year-old transgender girl, was brutally murdered October 3rd, 2002. A jury decision in September of this year led to the conviction of two of her killers on second-dregree murder charges.

The Remembering Our Dead project <www.rememberingourdead.org> exists to honor individuals murdered as a result of anti-transgender violence and prejudice, and draw attention to the issue of anti-transgendered violence. Remembering Our Dead is a project of Gender Education and Advocacy, Inc.

The Edmonton area Transgender Support Groups will be hosting Edmonton's event at the Pride Centre of Edmonton, 9540-111 Ave. A memorial listing those we are remembering will be available to view Monday to Friday 6pm to 10pm, during the Community Drop In. On Tuesday 20 November 2007 a special evening of remembrance will be held at the Pride Centre of Edmonton, from 8 pm to 10 pm. There will be refreshments provided and a freewill donation received to help cover the costs of this event.

If you have any questions you can contact: Biirtha A. at 780-758-1408.

List of Canadians who have been murdered as result of anti-transgender violence and prejudice.

Dianne Aubert Quebec City, Quebec, Canada 16-Feb-82 Stabbed in the back 121 times.

Philip Robert Filshie Toronto, Ontario, Canada 20-Dec-84 Stabbed in the side by Joyce Lorraine Filshie.

Lisa Janna Black Toronto, Ontario, Canada 2-Mar-87 Struck 20 times with a hammer by Synthia Kavanagh, her roommate and another transsexual. As a member of the straight community, I walked by the new centre and was curious, so checked this website. I noticed that there's been lots of controversy in the forums on this website about the location of the new centre in Norwood. I live just a couple of blocks from the centre, and certainly do welcome having the centre in Norwood. There are many folks in the neighborhood, like me, who have good jobs and are decent community oriented people. I can't make the BBQ, since I'll be out of town, but would like to thank you for extending the invitation to the community at large....

Volunteers Needed

The Pride Centre is looking for volunteers who can come on the long weekend (Aug 5, 6 & 7) to help with prepping & painting walls

If anyone can help out please call Dru at the Pride Centre at 488-3234

If you can't help out this weekend but would like to help out in the future please feel free to call to find out what we will be doing and when.

Pride Power (2006 Pride Festival Events)

PRIDE POWER!
